Rome – eternal city and heart of Italy
© Michaela Schöllhorn / pixelio.de
Two and a half thousand years of cultural history...
...brought together in the buildings of a single city. Rome brings together more styles than any other European metropolis – and yet the city still presents a picture of harmony.
The historic city centre is dominated by impressive remains of antiquity, such as the splendid Colosseum, the Pantheon with its imposing dome, the Forum and Hadrian’s Mausoleum, later rebuilt as the Castel Sant’Angelo.
You can get the best view of the former centre of power from the terrace of today’s Capitol, which was built according to plans by Michelangelo. On the other bank of the river Tiber, the smallest state in the world awaits, with unique artistic treasures. Enthusiasts from all over the world flock to St Peter’s, the Vatican Museums and Michelangelo’s magnificent frescos in the Sistine Chapel.
